Locks are necessary security tools that have been around for thousands of years. As a matter of fact, almost everything has a lock to keep it secure, including a smartphone. However, varieties of locks have surfaced over the years in search of sophistication and higher levels of security, but there are two distinct categories of locks that every other lock falls under; Mechanical and Electronic locks. In this article, we will look at these two categories and find out what makes them different.
When you think about locks, the first type of lock that comes to your mind is mechanical locks. Mechanical locks have been around for ages and have proven their reliability to keep places secure. These types of locks always require a key to operate.
These locks contain spring-loaded bolts that can only be retracted by applying force to the bolt itself.
Cylinder locks are one of the most common locks in the mechanical lock category. The mechanism, keyhole, and tumbler are housed in a cylinder-like setting.
These locks are one of the most secure types of mechanical locks because of their structure. A deadbolt lock requires a knob or key before it can be opened, which means it doesn’t operate using spring bolts.
Mortise locks are another type of mechanical lock that offers a decent level of security but are hard to install. Mortise lock installation requires drilling the door for its cartridge.
Electronic locks do not require a key but make use of electrical power. It can be unlocked using WiFi, Bluetooth, and other close-range devices. They are sometimes standalone devices connected to an access control system. As a user, you will not worry about physical keys and you add or remove any access code at your convenience. You can also have access to transaction logging.
These locks are operated on the owner’s smartphone using WiFi or Bluetooth. It often requires an app and can be unlocked from anywhere in the world.
These electronic locks make use of a combination of codes that are known to the owner and trusted individuals.
This is a more sophisticated and expensive electronic lock that requires fingerprint verification before it can unlock. Other methods of access are voice recognition, eye scanners, etc.
The locks require proximity or a slight touch of key fobs or cards to unlock the door.
Sometimes, it may be a challenge to choose between a mechanical and electronic lock. However, whether you’re thinking of going with the traditional mechanical locks or the more sophisticated electronic locks, you have to get a professional locksmith for your lock installation.
